Leak & Gas Leak Detection

A smell of rotten eggs near the range, the water heater or the meter is a reason to act now. We find gas leaks with detectors and pressure tests, repair the line to code, and work with SoCalGas to get service back on, anywhere in Orange County and at any hour.

Finding and fixing gas leaks

Treat a suspected gas leak as an emergency. We come out at any hour with calibrated combustible gas detectors, acoustic listening equipment and pressure test gauges, isolate the section of pipe that is losing gas, record the results for SoCalGas, and repair or replace that section to the current California Plumbing Code.

A leak can sit anywhere gas flows: at the meter or regulator, in the flexible connector behind a range or dryer, at a furnace, water heater, fireplace or pool heater, or along a line buried in the yard. Sometimes the first sign is a high gas bill, sometimes a red tag left by SoCalGas, sometimes a hiss behind the stove. Our CSLB C-36 license covers the whole job, from tracing the leak to putting the system back in service.

Every gas repair finishes with a pressure test that holds, a written record of the result, and, where SoCalGas has to restore service, coordination so the meter can be turned back on and pilots relit. Gas work that needs a permit gets one, and you see the written price before the repair begins.

What sets our gas work apart

  • California C-36 license #1131308, which covers gas piping
  • 24-hour emergency response to gas smells
  • A written price before the repair starts
  • A written workmanship warranty on gas repairs

Warning signs of a gas leak

  • A rotten egg or sulfur smell near an appliance or the meter
  • Hissing from a gas line, connector or regulator
  • A SoCalGas bill that jumps with no change in use
  • A red tag on your meter or on one of your appliances
  • A strip of dead grass over a buried gas line
  • Pilot lights going out on more than one appliance

Call from outside

A person answers the phone 24 hours a day, so call as soon as you notice the smell; if it is inside, get everyone out first and call from the street.

Detect and isolate

Gas detectors and acoustic equipment narrow the leak down to a single fitting or run of pipe.

Test and repair

The affected section is pressure tested to code, then repaired or replaced in black iron or CSST.

Back in service

A final test, SoCalGas coordination where required, and every pilot relit before we leave.

Why choose us for gas leak repair in Orange

Gas work leaves no room for guesswork, so every repair is measured before and after. Here is what that looks like.

C-36 licensed gas work

Gas piping is handled under a California plumbing contractor license, by a plumber who works to the gas code.

More than one way to find a leak

Combustible gas detectors, acoustic listening, soap solution on fittings, and tracer gas for buried lines.

Red tags cleared properly

We fix the fault, record the pressure test, and work with SoCalGas so service is restored safely.

Permitted and inspected

Gas line repairs and new gas piping are permitted and inspected, which keeps the record clean for resale.

What affects the price of gas leak repair

Where the leak is and how easily it can be reached drives most of the cost. A loose appliance connector in the open is quick; a leak inside a wall, under a slab or along a buried yard line takes more work to reach.

The amount of pipe to replace and the route it takes matter as well, along with whether trenching is needed and whether a permit, an inspection and SoCalGas reinstatement are part of the job. Older homes in Orange with original black iron gas lines may need a longer section replaced than a newer CSST system.

After the leak is located, the repair is priced in writing, and you approve that figure before any work starts.

Gas leak questions, answered

A gas smell should always be treated as a possible leak. Utility gas is given its odor on purpose so that any leak can be noticed, so get out of the house, leave the switches alone, and call SoCalGas and a licensed plumber once you are outside.

If you smell gas right now, leave the house, do not operate light switches, and call SoCalGas or emergency services from outside. Then call us, day or night; once SoCalGas has shut the meter, we locate and repair the leak.

To find a gas leak we use calibrated combustible gas detectors, acoustic listening equipment and a pressure test that meets code. Buried yard lines get a tracer gas test, which pinpoints the leak without trenching the entire run.

Gas line repairs usually need a permit. Cities across Orange County, and the County itself in unincorporated areas like North Tustin, expect gas piping work to be permitted and inspected, so we file for it and meet the inspector at the property.

A red-tagged meter can be cleared. We repair or replace the section that caused the tag, document a pressure test, and coordinate with SoCalGas so the service can be turned back on safely.

Questions

Leak & Gas Leak Detection: questions we get asked

I smell gas. What should I do first?
Get everyone out of the house. Leave light switches alone, keep phones outside, and do not go hunting for the leak. From the street, call SoCalGas or emergency services, then call us. SoCalGas makes the site safe, and we carry out the repair that lets the meter be turned back on.
How can you find a leak nobody can see?
We split the system into sections and pressure test each one to find the part that cannot hold. From there, detectors and acoustic equipment track the leak to a specific pipe. Hidden water leaks follow the same method, starting with the water meter: if its dial moves while everything in the house is off, a pipe is leaking.
SoCalGas red-tagged my meter. Can you help?
We can. The tag stays until a licensed contractor repairs whatever SoCalGas found, such as a leaking connector, a damaged line or an unsafe appliance hookup. We complete and test the repair, and SoCalGas then returns to restore service.
Does a slab leak always mean a repipe?
Not always. Many Orange County homes sit on slab foundations, and a first leak in copper that is otherwise in good shape can often be fixed at the spot or bypassed with a short reroute. Once leaks start repeating in the same slab, the pipe is usually worn out throughout, and moving the line overhead avoids breaking the floor again.

Need help now?

We’re just a call away.

Shut the water off at the meter if you can, then call. We will tell you what to do while we are on the way.
